Obituary for Yvonne Jeannette Parkhurst

Yvonne Jeannette Parkhurst passed away on February 6, 2024, in Salem, Oregon. She was 88 years old.

Yvonne was born on April 3, 1935 to Roscoe and Alta (Somerwill) Ashcraft in Wyatt, West Virginia. She was the second of three daughters. Because her parents were both deaf, signing was her first language and she had to visit neighbors in order to learn to speak English. The family moved to Ohio and later Oregon, where she attended Jefferson High School in Portland and graduated in 1952.

She married Jack Weinbender when she was 17, on August 22, 1952. They were married for 18 years and had two children: Loretta Jeanne and Jack Jr. The family made their home in Portland where Yvonne worked at First National Bank for 20 years. She married her second husband, Milton Parkhurst, on March 2, 1974, and the two moved to Tacoma, Washington and later, McKenna. They enjoyed traveling yearly to Arizona as snowbirds and were married for 36 years, until his death in 2010. She spent her final years close to her children in Dallas, Oregon and later, Windsong Memory Care in Salem, where the staff and residents became like a second family.

Yvonne will be remembered by everyone as an incredibly hard-working woman with a cheerful and sweet spirit who loved her family tremendously. She was an avid crafter, reader, letter-writer, and record keeper. One of her great delights was researching and recording her family’s genealogy, and she loved to share photos and stories with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Loretta and Jack (Mary); grandchildren, Sarah, Melissa (Corin), Jennifer (Rick) and Jack (Tiffany); and seven great-grandchildren. Bollman’s Tribute Center is caring for the family.
