Obituary for Michael Stephen Calef

Michael Calef, a resident of Independence, Oregon died on Friday, January 20th in Salem Hospital. Mike was born on August 6, 1948, in Eugene, Oregon the son of Gerald and Dorothy Calef. Mike graduated from Sheldon High School in Eugene 1966. Mike loved playing baseball and was a pitcher his senior year at Sheldon where the team made runner up at the State championship. Mike attended Oregon State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in horticulture and a minor in ag business. Mike began farming with his father and uncle in the Eugene area and in 1974 he began farming near Independence. Over the years, he farmed cherry and prune orchards, row crops, wheat, blueberries and grass seed. Mike married Susan Jewell on March 1, 1975, in Oregon City, Oregon. Mike enjoyed the outdoors, camping at Paulina Lake, hunting deer and elk as well as fishing. Mike was a member of the Polk County Farm Bureau, served on the Agripac cannery board of directors, served on various committees and was a supporter of the Central Panther Club and FFA organizations.

He is survived by his wife, Susan, sons, Josh (Amber), Matt (Lena) sister, Andrena Freeborn (Dean), grandchildren, Jacob, David, Elizabeth, Samuel and Naomi.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 11th at 2:00PM at the Evangelical Bible Church in Dallas.
