Obituary for Maryann Slocum

Maryann King (Graham) Slocum

May 14, 1938 - March 5, 2024

Maryann passed away peacefully at Avamere Rehab in Junction City, Oregon. She was 85 years old. Born in St. Helens, Oregon, she was the daughter of Agnes (Hansen) and Chester King. Her father worked in the logging industry, so the family moved around. Her mother was a teacher.

Maryann started high school in Junction City where she made many friends. She spent her senior year in Falls City, Oregon, graduating in 1956. She was a Smilaroo Princess on the Smile Court, representing Falls City among the Polk County Schools that year. She enjoyed tennis and swimming, was a Yell Leader for sporting events, the business manager for the student body and an honor student.

She married Falls City local, Lloyd "Bud" Graham in August 1956 and they had their first daughter, Susan, just shy of a year later. Marie, their second daughter, was born fourteen months after that. The family moved to Corvallis in the early sixties.

Then known as Mrs. Graham, Maryann worked as a school secretary for Corvallis School District for thirty years, retiring in 1994. She spent time at Western View and Highland View Jr. Highs, and Inavale and Fairplay Grade Schools. She loved working with the students and her coworkers. She spent several years on the district's Wellness Committee which focused on promoting good health.

Maryann married her second husband, William "Ted" Slocum, in 1999. They enjoyed family as well as camping in their fifth wheel trailer. She had a passion for photography, especially for recording visits from loved ones.

In 2012 Maryann suffered a series of small strokes and moved to Junction City to be near her sister, Sara. During the next twelve years Maryann needed increasing care, so she lived in care facilities. A million thanks to all her caregivers during those years. Even as she became quieter and less mobile, she kept her positive attitude and sense of humor. Her wonderful smile will be remembered by many.

She is survived by her sister Sara Jane Rue, daughters Sue Zemliak and Marie McCain, son-in-law Larry Zemliak, grandson Will Leonard, and granddaughter T'liia Franklin.

Maryann's Celebration of Life will be held Saturday May 4th at 1pm at the Corvallis Community Center. They are located at 2601 NW Tyler Avenue, Corvallis, Oregon, on the southern edge of Chintimini Park.

Maryann's wish was to donate to Shriners Hospitals for Children. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor.
