Obituary for June Elizabeth Doran (Morton)

OBITUARY – JUNE ELIZABETH DORAN
June Elizabeth Doran died on Feb. 5th, 2023 at her home in Dallas, OR. She was 96-1/2 yrs. old.

She was born on a farm near Verndale, Minn. On July 1, 1926, the second of four children born to Ruben and Elizabeth (Beno) Morton. She attended a one-room country school for eight years, then four years of high school, graduating in 1944.
She worked as a hired girl on a neighboring farm as a teenager and even delivered a baby in her youth! She came to Oregon and was employed in the Oregon Shipyards as an Electrician’s Helper, and then was employed by the Civil Service Commission as Clerk-Typist-Stenographer.

In 1945 she was united in marriage to Byron Swenson, who died from injuries in a logging accident in 1964. Two children, a son and a daughter were born to them. As a widow, June began refreshing her clerical skills at Salem Business School. She then decided to go back to school at the Oregon College of Education in Monmouth, OR. in 1966, graduating with a BS degree in Education in 1970. She was employed by the Willamette Law School for one year, and then went to work for the Salem School District.

In 1976, she was united in marriage to John Doran, who passed away May 20, 2005. John and June had nearly 29 happy and busy years together. They traveled in several states, including Alaska, and were very busy with their combined family of children, and grandchildren; as well as great-grandchildren in the later years. She deeply loved and felt blessed having not only one but “two” special families. She would always say “what would I do without my two wonderful families?”

June is survived by her son, Gary Swenson of Christmas Valley, OR, step-daughter Carol (Phil) Jones of rural Dallas, OR., seven grandchildren: Tiffany Bouchard, Justin Hamilton, Brady (Amy) Hamilton, Brody Hamilton, Angie (Alva) Andersen, Barry Lennon, Tamara (Marc) Arredondo; seven step-grandchildren: Guy (Angela) Jones, Angela Morgan; Karl (Ali) and Hugh Doran, Kristina (Travis) Walker; David (Renee), Dan (Katie) Doran; 13 great-grandchildren, 21 step-great-grandchildren, son-in-law Al Hamilton, former daughter-in-law Peggy Southwick, several nieces & nephews, and widows of two deceased step-sons, Debi (Dan) DeBoer and Carolyn (Melvin) McMillen.

Also preceding her in death are her parents, her daughter Cheryl Hamilton, two sisters Mary Ellen and Sis and one brother, Willie, one granddaughter Kori, one great-grandson AJ, two step-sons, Dan and Roger, and one step-grandson, Dishon.

She was a member of the Dallas Evangelical Church for many years and had recently attended the First Baptist Church. In the past years she had taught Sunday School, been Den Mother for Cub Scouts, and a member of Christian Women’s Club. Her hobbies included crocheting, knitting, reading, working cross word puzzles, cooking, baking, and canning. She did not really watch television, with exception to Wheel of Fortune & Jeopardy every night. Her happiest moments were activities involving family and friends, attending all of her class reunions in Minnesota, attending church activities, including gospel singing.

She wanted to give special thanks to her son Gary for staying with her and granddaughter Tiffy & greats Jackson & Macy for helping care for her these past years so she could be at home, and special thanks to Serenity Hospice and all her regular visitors & supporters. She especially looked forward to her Wednesday morning weekly visits and egg & milk delivery from Phil & Carol, her son-in-law Al popping in often to visit & read the paper, reminiscing over Chinese or KFC lunches with her nephew Rex and niece Romaine, regular check-ins from daughters-in-law Debi & Carolyn, and her nieces Sandi, Gayle & Lisa, and her monthly tapioca pudding & visits from Vicki Hamilton, among the multitude of other visits and kindnesses from all her grandchildren, family & friends ~ too many to list!
