Obituary for Garwin Theodore Carlson

Garwin Carlson, formerly of Klamath Falls, OR passed away Monday, December 4, 2023 at WindSong at Eola Hills in Salem, OR. A graveside service will be held in Iowa on a later date.

Garwin Theodore Carlson, the son of Ransom D. Carlson and Esther G. Dick Carlson, was born February 23,1933 in rural Stanhope, IA. He graduated from Stanhope High School in 1951. He married Marcia Bosworth on September 9, 1955, following his service in the U.S. Army. Garwin attended Iowa State University, graduating with a degree in Agronomy/Soil Science. He was a career soil scientist working for the Soil Conservation Service and the US Forest Service until retirement in 1989. He and his family lived in Iowa before moving west to Wyoming and finally settling in Klamath Falls in 1974.

He is survived by sons Randy (Emma) Carlson of Tucson, AZ; Scott (Miriam) Carlson of Stanhope, IA; Tom (Audrey) Carlson of Tucson, AZ; daughter Jolene (Bob) Trost of Dallas, OR; 8 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren; brother Keith Carlson of Stratford, IA; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Garwin had a variety of interests including his backyard orchard, a large garden, and a beautifully landscaped yard filled with flowers. He had a passion for rockhounding and was a long-time member of the Klamath Falls Rock and Arrowhead Club. Garwin made many trips around Oregon searching for rocks and gems, as well as sharing his talents at rock and gem shows statewide. Memorials may be sent to the Klamath-Lake Counties Food Bank (www.klamathfoodbank.org) where Garwin donated fruit and garden produce and volunteered for years.
